Breaking Into Tech Today: A Veteran’s Grumble

Back in my day, breaking into the tech industry was straightforward. You had a technical degree, a decent resume, and maybe a certification or two from the Microsoft Certified Professional program, and you were golden. Now? It’s a whole different ball game. The industry’s grown, sure, but it’s also gotten… complicated. Too complicated, if you ask me. 🖥️

First off, the competition. It’s not just about what you know anymore; it’s about who you know. Networking, professional associations—back then, the closest we had to networking was swapping floppy disks at LAN parties. Today, you’ve got to be LinkedIn-in, GitHub-active, and probably tweeting about blockchain or something. Kids these days.

And the sectors? Consumer, business, wearables, IoT—back in the ’90s, we were just excited to get a Pentium processor. Now, you’ve got to specialize before you even start. Semiconductors? Microchips? We were just happy if our CRT monitors didn’t weigh a ton and our dial-up connected on the first try.

Innovation’s the name of the game now, and it’s moving faster than a 56k modem could dream of. But let me tell you, the thrill of cracking open a new piece of hardware or writing a script that actually worked first time? That hasn’t changed. Just don’t get me started on cloud computing versus the good old days of local servers…
