MGN Exclusive :: What's Coming from HP - The Details On a New Line of iPaqs

HP is working on a jaw dropping pile of machines taking full advantage of all the technology advancements in hardware and software they can. I think we all have to commend them on their innovation and commitment to development.

There are no less than seven new models in the works and we have the scoop. Let's start from the bottom up:

Eastwood

This looks like it will be called the h1700, it will replace the current h1930 and 1940 products.  At $229, this will be a very attractive entry level model.

These two devices, the Gable and Monroe, are very interesting because they are really multimedia PocketPCs.  Each will come with the Nevo Remote Control, an extremely cool product that can operate home theater and home automation gear via the high powered IR port on board.  They are loaded with software for "MJPEG video capture", and playback of MJPEG and MPEG 1 video.  If you get the Monroe device, you add the capability of MPEG4 capture and playback and it will be loaded with the Nevo Media Manager.  While it does not say directly in the information I have, these specs imply digital camcorder of sorts.

Model 1 should replace the h2200 and Model 2 could presumably replace the 4100 and 5000 series devices.  The Morpheus high end model includes a biometric finger print scanner, I am still unclear if this really has any purpose in the world but I guess you can never be too secure.  The iPaq wireless utility is updated for their new models and will make BT and Wi-Fi easier to configure.  Now Wi-Fi will handle much better WLAN security including CCX (includes CKIP & LEAP), 802.1x (PEAP, EAP-TLS), and WPA/TKIP support.  It looks like they are investigating a BVRP - Bluetooth Phone Dialer application also.  The CD with these units is fully loaded too, Clearview Suite, ListPro, VoIP, LanDesk, BlueFire, Cadenza mNotes, and a pile more....

The Magnesium case on this little baby really sets it apart from the rest.  It looks like the rugged aspect to this device will be a rugged case option, not a ruggedized machine like we had heard before, sorry to cause such a stir...  The best I can tell from the documentation I have seen this is the only VGA model in the works.  This one is defiantly designed to go head to head with the Toshiba e800 in specs and looks.

 

h6310 - Phone Edition Device

Size - 119 x 75 x 18.7 mm RAM - 64MB
Processor - TI Omap 1510 ROM - 64MB
Display - 3.5" QVGA TFT Expansion - SDIO
Battery - 1800 mAh Removable IrDA - Yes
OS - 2003 First Edition Wi-Fi - 802.11b
Camera - VGA CMOS Bluetooth - Yes

This is of course the convergent device most talked about this year to date.  The GSM/GPRS wireless is a Quad Band system covering 850/900/1800/1900 making this truly a world phone.  An optional snap on keyboard will make this a SMSing machine.  It will reportedly come with rubberized side grips, hopefully this won't be like the 2210's design.  Also included is to be a Leather  protective case..

So what ties them all together?

Here is one thing that I have always been impressed with on the HP/Compaq front, they try to make common accessories (other companies take note, I hate buying a new device and having to buy a whole set of new junk too).

Across the line, there are many common accessories including SD/CF Cards, USB Sync cables, auto adapter kits, foldable keyboards, Bluetooth GPS solutions, wired headsets, Bluetooth mono headsets, AC adapters, and being investigated is a Bluetooth stereo headset (cool).

In all there is some good stuff coming from HP this year, there are exciting times to be a gadget junkie.
