I have the Cingular 2125, and I set it up to check my pop3 account every 15 minutes. I have noticed that when it does this, the little E in the right corner by the signal strength stays on. I do have the unlimited data package, so it shouldn't be a problem. But does that mean that it is still connected when that E is on but it's not doing anything? Just curious.

Thanks,

If it is the same as GPRS, which I believe it is in this case, the E there means the connection is established but dormant. Without the E there is no connection and it has to dial in. When you are actively sending and receiving data, the connection is active. after a short delay of not sending any info it will go dormant, which is essentially like you aren't connected at all except when you go to send/receive data again it will be able to pick up the connection without having to dial in again.

Thanks. That is kind of what I figured, but it still bothered me every time I looked at it and saw that E up.

Just an FYI, the E means "E"dge, and that you are connected to the higher speed Edge. If you see a G, it means "G"PRS, which is somewhat slower.

I dunno about Cingular, but T-Mobile blocks the ability to see the E and only allows you to see G. This is NOT because they don't offer Edge connection speeds, but rather because they don't want you to know whether you're connected high speed or slow speed (since they haven't rolled out Edge in a lot of places yet).

Cheers!

The only drawback to being connected constantly is that your battery life will suffer for it. If that's not a concern, then don't worry.
