I love Google, but I have trouble loading on my SDA. Anyone else have same issues?

Have you tried www.google.com/pda ?

I have had some problems getting to Google in the past, but not recently. I usually end up using some other search page, but I'm sure that like most people, we use Google because it's a very small and simple page. I'm going to bookmark the /sda page now too.

google.com/pda got me in, but it's not making searches. Keeps saying the connection was lost. Other sites work so it's not the connection.
Should I be using a better browser like Opera?

The last time I tried the Opera PPC/SP Beta it was problematic. You could try the new Beta http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/products/.
Opera Mini is nice if your phone runs JAVA.

I'm about to ask a stupid question. How do I know if my SDA supports Java?

I tried the Opera Mobile version for the SDA and like it, but not quite enough to pay for it.

It looks like the SDA has JAVA Runtime. Go to Settings >Accessories - it may be there as Midlet Manager.
Actually if you to to http://mini.opera.com from your SDA browser the opera site will ask you to download MINI. It should install right from there if you have Java. Worked fine loading on my Voq.

I went to install Mini, and the site recognized my phone as a Palmone Treo 650. Next, after I asked for an alternate version, I was asked whether I wanted a low or high memory version. I chose high, because even though the SDA doesn't have a lot of RAM, it's probably more than most phones mini is used on.
It started up fine, but the text is incredibly small, so I changed it up one level. Unfortunately, after also changing it to the proper network setting, I was unable to get it to connect. I will do some more testing once I figure out how to run the java applications, or where they are stored. I have looked in every menu I can think of, every nook and cranny, and can not find where to launch the Java launcher. Paying for the Mobile browser seems like a better option right now.

This is the one that works for me.
I could not figure out the Opera Mini jar and jad stuff. After spending most of this afternoon on it...I gave up. I guess I don't need to fix what ain't broke. pIE works fine IMHO.

I couldn't find the java launcher either. I went to mini.opera.com and installed. the java launcher is somewhere because I found it in the Task Manager afterward. then after powering up it's gone. I went back to min.opera.com again and tried to download it again. I answered no on confirmation and the Java launcher popped up. I like the browser (I used extra large font) but too much trouble to get it going.

If you ActiveSync you can go to explorer and find the file I think it is jad or something(whatever the mini executable is) right click and create a shortcut. Cut the shortcut and paste it in the Windows/Startup Menu folder. Now you can just click there and start the program. You will have to power cycle the phone for the shortcut to show up in your menu. You can edit the name to when ever you like.

I was able to install Opera Mini (high memory version) by connecting my phone (MPx220) via ActiveSync and then going right to the website. I had been trying to do the install that can be done from your own computer...but never figured it out (jad and jar files). The install directly from the website was easy enough.
The browser is launched with the "Games & Apps" shortcut (wm2003se) that I had moved to my "games" folder 'cuz when I got the phone and originally clicked on it, that's all that was in there...a couple games. Opera Mini seems to run fine on the 220 but is an "interesting" program. Some things are very user friendly - other things not so much. Don't make a mistake naming your internet shortcuts 'cuz there is no backspacing...if you do backspace it will delete everything you've already typed.
I never located it on the file manager tree. The start menu link is linking to something...but, I sure can't find it.
I'll have to use it for awhile and see if it's a keeper 'cuz I'm not so sure right now.

The SDA and the MPx Motorola use different version of smartphone, and apparently with different menus. Try abatis' suggestion of making a shortcut via activesync to create a link that's accessible from the phone menu.

The problem is...make a shortcut to what? If you can't find what is being linked to, how do you make a shortcut to it? I can make a shortcut to the "games & apps" midlet but, what's the point of that? I was hoping to make a shortcut to the Opera Mini specific startup to avoid the extra step. See what I mean?
I used "file manager" to search the phone for .jad & .jar files and came up with four jar files. They are s1_suite.jar & s2_suite.jar (located in the \Windows folder along with matching .utf files), s3_suite.jar (located in the \Storage\windows\appdb folder along with it's matching .utf file), and manager.jar (also located in the \Windows folder but with no matching .utf files).
I assume s1 & s2 are the pre-intalled games and manger is the midlet. So, I made a shortcut to s3 which I assume is OperaMini, and placed it in the \Storage\windows\Start Menu folder. When I tried to execute it I get an error message that says:
"There is no application associated with "s3_suite". Run the application first and then open this file inside the application."
I tried making a shortcut to the .utf file as well and got the same message. I've tried copying the two original files to the start menu and got the same error message. There is also a "selector.utf" file that I've tried copying to the start menu and got the same message. The only other files in there are named like "s3__d3.db" and have the little gears logo on them. So, they are not the program itself.
It does not look to me like you can just make a shortcut to the appropriate .jar file and link directly to the java app you want. It seems you must access it via the midlet which already has a link on the startup menu, so there would not be an advantage to making another shortcut to it. You'd still have to go through the midlet to get to OperaMini.
AND...as as side note, I've used OperaMini to look at a few of the common internet pages I look at and it displays some of them in a completely un-useable way. I'm referring specifically to Sigalert.com which I get traffic conditions and real time maps from. They don't display right in the OperaMini browser. Just thought I'd mention it. It says it offers the real web to phones not normally cabable of displaying it...but it doesn't work for all pages. Using pIE the maps on Sigalert display the same as they do on my home computer. So, OperaMini offers some advantages but has it's own limitations.

I FOUND IT!!!!!!
Once you downloaded Opera Mini - Go to:
Application Data/Tao/Intent/App/Jam/Midlets/Operamini
There is a file without a description. On my phone it has an icon i usually see with a txt file. When i right clicked it i saw it was an executable jar file. Then I followed Abatis' instructions. I made a shortcut and moved it to Windows/Startup/Accessories.
When I tested it it gave me a failed to install error. I clicked OK and There it was!!!!
Now lete's see if this browser is worth it.

Good for you RobGreen! I'll be interested to hear what you think of the app. Yesterday I was trying to load a bookmarked web site (that I access pretty much daily) using pIE and kept getting a message that said "the page you're looking for can't be found" (or whatever the exact message is that is similar to that). So, I tried a few other bookmarks I have saved and got the same error message. I opened OperaMini and it loaded the pages right away. Wierd...but, good. I don't think I'll use OperaMini all the time, but there are advantages to having a backup on occasions such as yesterday. I've tried loading those same pages since, using pIE, and they loaded just fine. Guess it was just a glitch. But, I was VERY glad I had a way to load them at the time I wanted/needed them. I've also used OperaMini to load a page that just looks like cr*p in pIE...and it's very useable in OperaMini. But, I've had the opposite experience too - where OperaMini couldn't handle the page at all and in pIE it looks great. Like I said, it's good to have a plan B! There's a particular site I use that loads just fine on the MPx200 and MPx220 on Cingular but will not load using the same phones with a T-Mobile sim. I discovered accessing the same site via Skweezer works perfectly. Live and learn. I learned that the MPx200 is not OperaMini capable.
Let us know how it goes for you!
BTW - the location where you found the file doesn't exist on the MPx220. I searched for any files with "opera" (opera*.*) in the name and only came up with a .gif image. Oh well...
