Microsoft grabs lead in handheld market

 Microsoft has a firm grip on the handheld software market, winning the lead in shipments for the first time, a new report from Gartner shows.
Shipments of handhelds that use Microsoft's Windows CE operating system rose by about 33 percent to about 1.4 million in the third quarter, compared with the same period last year. Meanwhile, shipments of handhelds that use the Palm operating system shrank by 26 percent to 851,000. Research In Motion showed huge growth, with shipments jumping more than 356 percent to 565,000 to round out the top three, the research company said.
The shipment figures gave Windows CE a 48 percent market share worldwide, up from 41 percent a year ago. PalmSource's Palm OS held 30 percent, down from 47 percent a year ago.

Great news for puzzle maniacs! We've just released our latest puzzle game pack, Traffic Mania in cooperation with Pocket Napalm. Traffic Mania is a cool (and weird) puzzle game where you have to free your car from a traffic jam by moving the other cars out of the way, featuring bombs, rockets and lots of puzzles to solve. A true must-have for any WM2K3 Pocket PC

Although I'm busy judging for the Pocket PC Magazine Awards there are a couple of must-haves from ScaryBear Software that you might want to put on your device right away (and yes, these were the first I installed on my iPAQ h6315):
- Check Notifications
This application will display all the notification events in the system's database and will give you a total count of events. You will have an option to clear out all the "SSTimeChange", "conmgr.exe", and "IA_Caller_ID.exe" events from your database and get a new count, or create a log file of all the events. Duplicate events are highlighted on the screen in a red color, and can be removed by activating the "Remove all duplicate events" in the settings panel.
- Notification Clear Fix
This application will install in your device's startup folder, and will be executed after every soft-reset of your device. This will ensure that the offending events described previously will not be present in your system's notification event database. This is the best way to clear out these events automatically. Note, this startup program will only remove these events: "SSTimeChange" and "conmgr.exe", and "IA_Caller_ID.exe" (with an event type of "AppRunAfterRestore").
- best of all, these applications are free. They are very easy to use and can really make a difference for some of you out there whose device seems to be getting slower after each soft-reset.

I had a lot of pics of both the rz1700 and the hx4700 but because the HP display table was located in a poorly lit portion of the hall, hardly any of them came out worth showing. Also, none of the rx3000 line was available.

What is NavPoint?

One of the more interesting features of the new HP h4700 is the NavPoint touch pad (powered by Synaptics, the same folks who make most of the laptop touch pads for Dell and others). This is the first PocketPC to have anything like this device. There are several modes where you can use this pad to arrow left and right or even move a cursor around on the screen, just like a mouse. This is a very cool feature. There is a nice flash demo of what you can do wit it on the Synaptics site.

Bourne Supremacy bats .500 with mobile technology

Don't worry, no spoilers here...
The wife and I had one of those rare "ditch the kids for a movie" nights tonight and saw the Bourne Supremacy. It was quite good and very action packed.
There were two MGN moments in the film, one good and one that made my mobile hair stand up on the back of my neck. The good: at one point Jason Bourne pulls out a device and clones a sim card. Doable and cool, I wish I had that little gadget. And the Bad/Ugly: A Dell X5 PocketPC is used as a fingerprint scanner. Yup a scanner, somehow built into the screen. I lifted print is held to the screen and seconds later, after the entire database of fingerprints (somehow stored on the device) it shows the result on the scanner/screen. Nice trick, next movie, hire me as the PPC tech consultant and I will stop you from embarrassing yourself.

First 60 minutes with HP iPAQ hx4700

At first sight, you'll notice the device's unusual design. HP designers allowed their imagination free rein and hx4700 resembles a futuristic communicator rather than 2004 PDA. Forget about silvery plastic - the body is made of magnesium alloy so that it is as light as plastic but incomparably more durable. Its dark colour with metallic shine makes the device appear smaller than it is. Instead of a common joypad, this iPAQ features a unique touchpad, the same as that used in laptop computers. It can work in two modes - either as a rather unusual joypad or as a normal touchpad which even shows a pointer on the display! It remains to be seen if it is an ingenious innovation or a dead end - now, it's too early to judge. For a device with two expansion slots (SDIO and CF type II), it is extremely thin - it looks gorgeous with its 15 millimetres. Other dimensions are bigger than usual, but it is due to a giant display. Display protection is almost perfect. Compared with a plastic shield in iPAQs h3000 series, this solution is much better.

I wear too many hats! I am a full-time graduate student, a youth pastor, a library assistant, a husband, and a father. Not too long ago I was an extremely unorganized person, forgetting and mismanaging important information. But now I’m the opposite because of the new love of my life—my iPAQ Pocket PC.
A few years ago I bought a Handspring Visor (a Palm OS device) and eventually migrated to the Pocket PC. Since then, I’ve had one HP Jornada and three iPAQ Pocket PCs. I’m currently using the iPAQ h2210 with an add-on iPAQ Micro Keyboard. I connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi when a wireless connection is available, and by Bluetooth through my cell phone the rest of the time. My Pocket PC is so integrated into my daily life now that I can not imagine functioning without it.
The vast majority of people, including those who currently use PDAs, are not aware of many of the Pocket PC’s capabilities. I decided I would keep track of everything I did with mine for one week (excluding the typical Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks stuff). Here are the results:

 WordLogic™ is a text entry program which sports a Egonomic design allowing for high-speed prediction with the use of icons and color that makes the experience with the keyboard familiar, efficient and fun.
I've been using the program for several weeks now and have to say it is by far the greatest text input program out! The keyboard layout is just fantastic and easy to the eye (no clutter). Compared to the preinstalled keyboard which is basically similar to the computer keyboard layout, the WordLogic sports a simplified keyboard layout with the removal and regrouping of extraneous keys.
